Diablo 3 Demon Hunter Skill Guide Overview

We've put together this?Diablo 3?Demon Hunter guide?to get you up. Like the previous posts on the Witch Doctor and Wizard, this Demon Hunter guide will provide you with an overview of the Demon Hunter class, give you an idea of what gameplay is like, go over the skills that are available in beta, and discuss its strengths and weaknesses.

At the end of the post, you will find a realistic (i.e. not twinked out) video of a level 8 Demon Hunter killing the Skeleton King. This will give you a good idea of what the Demon Hunter is capable of.

Diablo 3 Demon Hunter Gameplay
The Demon Hunter is a ranged class that uses bows and crossbows as its primary weapons. The Demon Hunter can either use both two-handed bows and crossbows but also is capable of dual-wielding hand crossbows, a new class of weapon not previously seen in other Diablo games.
The Demon Hunter is the only class in the game with two resource types: Hatred and Discipline. Both of these resources regenerate slowly over time. Every other class in the game only has a single resource type. There are distinct advantages and one disadvantage to this that strongly influences Demon Hunter gameplay versus the other classes.

The good thing about having two types of resources that regenerate on their own is that you can use a lot of resource-spending abilities in a row before running dry, at least compared to other classes. Also, since your resource pools generate over time, this makes the Demon Hunter really good a kiting. While you are running away from your enemy, you will be regenerating Hatred and Discipline that you can use for attacks and defense once you get some distance.

The primary disadvantage of having two types of resources is that it makes your skill bar feel extremely crowded. The Demon Hunter needs Hatred Generators, Hatred Spenders, and Discipline Spenders. On top of that when you consider the Demon Hunter has debuffs (Marked for Death) and pets (Companion, Sentry Turret), it feels like there just is not enough room on the Demon Hunter’s skill bar for everything that you will want.

As far as damage goes, the Demon Hunter is really good at both AoE and single-target damage. Impale deals a large quantity of damage with the Chemical Burn rune (375% total weapon damage), Hungering Arrow is arguably the most powerful single-target resource-generator int he game, and the variety of AoE skills the Demon Hunter possesses make it extremely strong.
Compared to other ranged classes, the Demon Hunter has less damage mitigation abilities but more evasive skills. Caltrops is probably the best snare in the game, particularly since its cost is so cheap and you can keep dropping it. Smoke Screen has no comparison in Diablo 3 and lets you completely vanish from site.

With that said, the Demon Hunter really does not get much damage absorption – it does not have tanking pets like the Witch Doctor or damage shields like the Wizard. It even lacks the Wizard’s variety of knockback effects. This means you need to be well-versed in kiting to have success with the Demon Hunter.
